Cowboys open season with 2-0 record, prep for Bend on Tuesday
The Cowboys No. 4 doubles tennis team pulled out a win Thursday afternoon, helping to solidify Crook County's 5-3 victory against The Dalles Wahtonka.
"It went well," Cowboys Head Coach Sue Boyle said. "I mixed the doubles teams up so everyone would have a chance to play a match."
For a while, the matches were looking doubtful for the Cowboys doubles teams.
Crook County's Devin Pham and Paul Robideau lost to brothers Jose and Abner Mondragon 6-7, 6-2, 6-2. Mike Bates and Tim Fenderson lost to Mark Coy and Eric Reyes 6-2, 6-2 in straight sets. Roland Halsey and Joe Oehlschlaeger lost to Adam Koch and David Eldridge 6-1 and 7-5.
The day changed though with Crook County's Tom Leavitt and Jeff Robideau, who defeated Nick Reyes and Victor Mondragon 6-3, 6-4.
In singles play, the Cowboys did quite well, winning all four matches.
Lex Romine won 7-5, 6-7 and 6-3 against Lincoln Gay.
"The singles did well," Boyle said. "Lex had a good match against Lincoln."
Michael Cutuli easily defeated Josh Wilcox 6-1, 6-0. Fellow Cowboy Zac Thompson won against Wesley Kennedy 6-0, 6-4. John Morgan came out on top against Victor Marquez 6-0, 6-0 in straight sets.
Crook County vs. Madras
Likewise, Crook County defeated Madras 6-2 in overall play on Tuesday in the Cowboys' first match of the season.
"All singles won," Boyle said, adding that the doubles teams also played well. "It was a good team effort, right off the bat. A good effort."
In singles play, Romine defeated Jason Garcia 6-0, 6-1. Cutuli won against Brian Anderson 6-1, 6-3. Thompson beat Ezra Pasikaton 6-1, 6-1 in straight sets, and Morgan defeated Keegan O'Brien 7-5, 6-2.
In doubles play, Cowboys Paul Robideau and Fenderson lost against Mervyn Garcia and Skyler Sensaugh 6-2, 6-2 in straight sets. Fellow Cowboys Riccardo Bohle and Jorge Toledo lost to Jonathon Hutchins and Nick Henderson 6-0 and 7-5. However, Pham and Bates went on to defeat Daniel Serrano and Daniel Bueno 6-3, 6-2. Likewise, Alex Finnerin and Oehlschlaeger defeated Rakesh Phillips and Rogerio Galaviz 6-0, 6-2.
On Tuesday, the boys play at Bend High School. Then on Thursday, they head to Mountain View to play there.
Boyle looked ahead to the upcoming week.
"I think we're going to work on doubles," she said. "We're going to try and start forming the teams. Keeping the ball in play for singles and doubles."
The coach said she also wants her players to work on consistency and strategy.
