OSAA contracts judge on Roosevelt incidents

I received a press release last week from the Oregon School Activities Association about Roosevelt High School. The OSAA has contracted with former Chief Judge Mary Deits of the Oregon Court of Appeals to conduct an investigation into the incidents involving Roosevelt and its opponents, Churchill and North Eugene, at the 2007 Class 5A State Basketball Championships in Eugene last month, according to the release.
Roosevelt eliminated the Crook County Cowboys basketball team in the second round of the state playoffs on their way to Eugene.
The release says Deits will interview students, police, security personnel, volunteers, and OSAA staff and report her findings on or before April 25.
All of this comes after school officials reported that they were taunted with racial insults while playing in the state playoffs in Eugene.
I applaud the OSAA for taking this matter seriously. If the reports are true, it's terribly unfortunate. The state playoffs are a time for celebration, and an investigation on a matter such as this one simply taints what should be an otherwise joyful event.
We've come a long way, but when events like this happen, if they in fact turn out to be true, it truly puts everything in perspective and shows how much further we need to go.
