Cowgirls slay Dragons

Eleven Cowgirls score as Crook County routes Dallas 83-48 on Tuesday, Dec. 18

by: FRED HOUSTON JR/CENTRAL OREGONIAN - Kaitlyn Duncan goes up for two of her 11 points against Dallas on Tuesday.

The Crook County High School girls basketball team is scoring a lot of points these days, but if you talk to Head Coach Kurt Sloper it's rebounding that he can't say enough about.
On Tuesday, Dec. 18, the Cowgirls defeated Dallas High School 83-48 and had 11 girls score points.
"We had 56 rebounds total in the game," said Sloper. "So we were giving ourselves opportunities on the offensive end and then of course limiting theirs as well. So that was a huge difference for us."
Lindsey Dunn led the Cowgirls in rebounding with 10, but Jessica Lea and Sarah Crofcheck were close behind with nine each, while Kady Stafford had eight.
Crook County had four girls score in double figures led by Lea with 20. Jamie Cary chipped in 15 and Kaitlyn Duncan and Danni Severance each had 11 points. M. Stewart led the Dragons with 19 points.
The Cowgirls got off to a quick start in the game, outscoring the Dragons 22 to 8 in the first quarter, and they continued to extend their lead throughout the game.
"We put together a real complete game," Sloper said. "And that was nice to see. We were scoring 20 points give or take a couple each quarter, so we were pleased with the consistency."
Crook County made only 27 of 76 shots on the night, but they were 10 for 27 behind the three-point arc, so Sloper was pleased with the overall shooting performance.
The Cowgirls also took care of the ball, giving up only eight turnovers while forcing 19 turnovers from the Dragons.
Crook County is now 5-2 on the season and is averaging 67.5 points per game while holding their opponents to 50 points a night.
The Cowgirls are off until after Christmas when they go to Marshfield High School in Coos Bay for a three-day tournament on Dec. 27-29.
"The kids played well." Sloper added. "It was fun to see a good consistent game."
