Ochoco National Forest will soon be accepting reservations for renting two remote cabins; the Cold Springs Guard Station and the Big Summit Winter Bunkhouse.
Cold Springs is a popular Forest Service Fee Demonstration summer cabin rental located approximately 25 miles east of Ochoco Ranger Station. The cabin, which is available from Memorial Day Weekend through mid-October, sleeps eight people, has kitchen facilities and two bathrooms and is located in an old growth ponderosa pine setting on the east side of Big Summit Prairie. Fees include a $50 deposit, and $50/night for lodging with no stay limit.
Applications for reservations will be accepted beginning Jan. 2. Reservations are made on a first come-first served basis and are granted upon receipt of fees. Telephone reservations and walk-ins are accepted. Interested parties are reminded not to drive to Ochoco Ranger Station to make reservations, as it is closed for the winter season.
Big Summit Winter Bunkhouse is another Forest Service Fee Demonstration cabin rental program that is currently available for reservations through mid-April.
The two cabins sleep 6-8 people each and have kitchens and two bathrooms. These cabins are located 1/4 mile from Ochoco Ranger Station and are strategically located for winter x-country skiing enthusiasts.
Skiing trails are located at Walton Lake, approximately eight miles northeast of the cabins. The roads are plowed between the bunkhouses and the ski trails.
Some weekends are still available and many weekdays are available for the month of December. Lodging fees are $60/night with no stay limit.
