Melvin H. "Red" Best passed away of natural causes on Friday, May 11, 2001. Best was 86 years old.
He was born in 1914 in Eugene, Ore., and as a young man worked as a sheepherder in the Fossil and Condon area. He also worked as a rancher on the Twin Butte Ranch.
In 1956, he married Sarah Jane Gregory in Winnemucca, Nevada. For a time he was employed in the lumber industry. Moving back to Prineville in 1956, he worked on the Les Schwab Ranch before retiring early in the 1970s.
Best is survived by his niece, Wanda Moore and step-daughter Maxine Vessel, both of Prineville; several nieces, great-nieces, great-nephews, great-great-nieces and great-great-nephews and four step-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, "Janie", two brothers and two sisters.
Services will be through the Redmond Memorial Chapel.
