Mayor Uffelman responds to story

To the editor: Your comparison of the City’s budget and statistics (July 26) does, and should, attract attention and your facts are correct. We have grown and we are providing services not provided 10 and 20 years ago. Our police department has been increased to meet problems and prevent others. Street maintenance has been increased to accommodate the additional streets in new neighborhoods. Sewer and water services have also expanded due to increased demand both because of increased population as well as additional mandates from State and Federal regulating agencies. Some wages were changed this year to reflect competitive wages paid by similar communities rather than based on cost of living. The City of Madras offered $80,000 per year for their city manager position. Over the years our police chief has been paid considerably less than chiefs in other cities of like size. The same is true of other city positions. This year it was time to step up to the plate. By the way, the major and council positions remain unpaid. Steve Uffelman Mayor
