Hospital health vital to our community

To the editor: Back in 1981 when the Pioneer Memorial Hospital levy failed in the November elections, six community leaders took it upon themselves to start a foundation in support of capital and equipment needs at the facility. Last Wednesday, October 24, the community honored them at a breakfast fund-raiser held at Meadow Lakes Golf Club. Anne MacDonald, Pauline Caine Shelk and Jim Garrett were presented with a special blown glass award from the Sisters Glassworks Gallery. Designed by Nancy Becker, and in the words of the artist, the pieces reflected the stalwart nature of the honorees. Ninety Foundation members attended the event. Kristi Steber, Board President introduced Keith Shipman of Horizon Broadcasting who gave the keynote address. He stressed the important part that hospitals and health care have in our communities, and emphasized the need to volunteer and donate to support these services. Tom MacDonald received a plaque in honor of his long-time commitments to the Foundation. Absent were Jim Rhoden and Mrs. Bodie who was to receive a posthumous award for her husband's efforts. I'd like to thank the community for making this first breakfast event a successful one. Together we can make a difference. Gillian Burton Executive Director Prineville Hospital Foundation
