Bucks survive scare against Country Christian

The Bucks secured a bye through the play-in round of the OSAA playoffs, which starts Wednesday. St. Paul will host a yet-to-be determined team in the first round this Saturday. Details of St. Pauls victory over Country Christian are on page 21.The St. Paul volleyball team entered the championship game of the Casco League playoffs on a high note.

After beating No. 5 Portland Lutheran 3-2 (20-25, 25-19, 25-8, 22-25, 15-13) Thursday night, the Bucks were ready for anything Country Christian could throw at them. As it turned out, the Cougars threw quite a lot.

Country Christian took a 2-0 lead before the Buckaroos stormed back in the final three games to win 3-2 (23-25, 20-25, 25-11, 25-18, 15-12), claim the league title and earn a bye past the play-in round to the 16-team state playoffs this Saturday.

Senior Delaney Sump led the team with 18 kills and three blocks, followed by 12 kills from fellow senior Sara Pierson.

After playing behind the first two games, Sump and Pierson began to control the net more in the third games and finishing plays set up by teammates Kennedy Smith (25 assists) and Remy Brentano (10 assists).

The Buckaroos (19-7, 15-1 Casco) now await the results of Wednesday’s play-in round before hosting a yet-to-be-determined opponent this Saturday.

After finishing third in the 2012 OSAA tournament and fourth in the 2011 playoffs, the Buckaroos have their sights set firmly on a state championship this year.
