Soccer: Gervais boys await playoff foe

Earlier in the month, Gervais boys soccer coach Juan Flores told his team they needed to win their final four games of the season to secure a playoff berth.

While the Cougars didn’t win all four games, they didn’t lose any games either, beating the Pleasant Hill Billies 5-0 and playing to a draw in the other three games.

Gervais (4-2-5, 4-1-3 Special District 3) finished the regular season last week with a 2-2 draw against Dayton Oct. 22, followed with a 1-1 tie at Delphian to finish third overall in the Special District 3 Conference.

With no more games left to play, the team now must wait until the OSAA rankings freeze Saturday evening before finding out where the team is scheduled to play next week.

Despite finishing the season with just two losses, the Cougars’ numerous draws and low strength of schedule has the team ranked 20th in the OSAA polls and near the bottom of the eligible playoff teams.

Once the playoff berths have been determined this Saturday, the teams will be paired off based on their rankings, with the highest-ranked teams playing the lowest-ranked teams.

With that in mind, the Cougars are almost assured to be playing on the road against one of the top five teams in 3A boys soccer when the schedule is released.

Regardless of who Gervais plays against, the first round of the playoffs is scheduled to begin Nov. 5.
