Pacific University, Woodburn Campus has partnered with Oregon Campus Compact (ORCC) to host Gabe Hernandez as an AmeriCorps VISTA member.
As a VISTA, Hernandez will bring together campus and community stakeholders to address issues of poverty.
Hernandez is from Woodburn and is an alum of Woodburn High School. He graduated from Oregon State University and is now serving as the Teacher Cadet Mentor Program coordinator at Pacific Universitys Woodburn campus. This year, hell create partnerships with the school district, community college and campus to improve college access and increase academic achievement for low-income and underserved students interested in teaching careers.
I went to school in Woodburn and I saw this as an opportunity to give back to the community that I grew up in, he said in a press release. Im going to work toward creating a strong foundation for the program and look for methods thatll help sustain the program for years to come. I know that this program can positively impact school completion rates and improve academic achievement.
In September, Gabe met with the 2013-14 VISTA team to officially celebrate the start of service. Inspired by the work of the 2012-13 AmeriCorps team, hes motivated to make an impact in Oregon.
