Cougar boys shut out by No. 1 Riverdale

The Gervais boys soccer team closed the book on its season last week when the team lost 6-0 in the first round of the playoffs to the Riverdale Mavericks.

The Cougars (5-4-5, 4-1-3 Special District 3) qualified for the post-season for the first time since 2008 after defeating Santiam Christian 3-1 on Nov. 1 to earn a first-round match against the No. 1-ranked Mavericks.

The two teams had met earlier in the season, with Riverdale taking a 5-2 win at Gervais High School in September. The Cougars were hoping to reverse their fortunes against the Mavericks on Nov. 4, but were held scoreless for the second time in three games to finish the season.

The game marked the fifth time in four years in which the two teams have met. Riverdale holds a 4-1 advantage over Gervais in those games. The Cougars last beat the Mavericks in 2011 in a 2-1 game.
