A 21-year-old Gervais woman was involved in a fatal pedestrian-vehicle accident Tuesday night along Highway 51 in Polk County.

Oregon State Police troopers report that Angelica Herrera-Clark, 21, of Gervais, was driving a 1996 Jeep Cherokee northbound when she struck 74-year-old Sarah Lou Muller in front of her home around 6:20 p.m. Muller was taken by ambulance to Salem Hospital where she died.

The press release states that there was no overhead street lighting and it would have been difficult for the driver to see Muller in the dark.

OSP troopers from the Salem Area Command office are investigating the crash. Preliminary information indicates Muller may have been crossing the highway in the dark, with the aid of a walker, while looking for a lost cell phone. No citations were issued and the highway was closed for about three hours.

According to Oregon Department of Transportation's Crash Analysis & Reporting Unit, this is the 45th pedestrian death in Oregon in 2013.
