Young Bulldogs ready to be unleashed
Coach: Enrique Sandoval (first year)
Last year: Woodburn finished fifth out of eight teams in the Mid-Willamette Conference with a record of 5-9 (8-15 overall) and failed to reach the postseason for the second consecutive year.
Key athletes: Rey Ruiz, Leo Garza, Orlando Hernandez
Key losses: Martin Ray, Dimitry Cherimnov, Zach Husko, Julian Veliz, Aaron Garcia, Michael Georgieff, Francisco Gudino, Andre Rocha, Misael Equihua
First home game: Friday against Rex Putnam
Outlook: New head coach Enrique Sandoval takes over for Jon Wolfer this season. Sandoval retains few holdovers from last seasons Bulldogs, which lost nine players to graduation. All-league Honorable Mention guard Rey Ruiz returns for his junior season after leading Woodburn in scoring in each of his first two seasons with the team. Ruiz gives the Bulldogs a steady leader in the backcourt who is capable of handling the ball and keeping defenses honest as a steady threat from beyond 3-point range. Teammates Orlando Hernandez and Leo Garza are the only other Bulldog players on the team with varsity experience.
