Husky girls hunting for third straight trip to postseason

by: WOODBURN INDEPENDENT ARCHIVES - North Marion senior Michaela Meeuwsen (center) gives the Huskies one of the top returning players in the Tri-Valley Conference this season.Coach: Dennis Melcher (15th year)

Last year: The Huskies qualified for their second straight play-in game last season after finishing fourth in the Tri-Valley Conference with a 4-6 record (11-14 overall).

Key player: Michaela Meeuwsen

Key loss: Jasmine Florez

First home game: Dec. 10 against Cottage Grove

Outlook: Since the 2010-11 season, North Marion has steadily improved each season, culminating in back-to-back appearances in the play-in round in the past two years. Despite the success, the Huskies have gone five years since qualifying for the state tournament and will seek to do so this year without the help of graduated guard Jasmine Florez, a First Team all-league honoree last year. The Huskies came heartbreakingly close last season, falling to league opponent Gladstone by four points in the Class 4A play-in round. Senior post Michaela Meeuwsen, a Second Team all conference player last season, has the ability to lead the Huskies this year as one of the best players in the Tri-Valley.
