St. Paul boys attempt to rebound from loss of last years large senior class

Coach: Vince Drago (fifth year)

Last year: The St. Paul boys basketball team had difficulty competing in an unusually strong Casco League last year. Despite being packed with a strong senior class, the Buckaroos finished fourth in conference with a 7-5 record (12-10 overall) and fell to Jewell in the league playoffs.

Key player: Cody Southerland

Key losses: Cole Weisz, Jake Soumokil, Cody Merten, Emilio Mendoza, Ray Connor, Joe Torres, Danny Drescher, Garrett Merten, Austin Weisz

First home game: Dec. 20 against Perrydale

Outlook: While the Bucks will attempt to retool this year with a younger cast of players, so too will the rest of their Casco League rivals. Senior guard Cody Southerland will lead the charge for St. Paul, along with teammates Cody Faber, Ryan Soumokil and David Elias. The Buckaroos’ returning quartet will attempt to return to the postseason after a two-year absence and will seek the team’s first playoff victory since qualifying for the quarterfinals in 2009.
