Charles Carl Frederick Gieswein of Silver Springs, Md. passed away on Nov. 18 at the age of 91. He was born in Holly, Colo., on March 8, 1922 to Fred and Mabel Gieswein. When Carl was 5 years old the Gieswein family moved to a farm in Aurora. Carl graduated from Woodburn High School, received his bachelors degree from University of Oregon and later earned his master's degree.
He served his country for more than 30 years in the United States Air Force and retired with the rank of lieutenant colonel. After retirement he developed a passion for cooking, painting and gardening.
He is survived by his children Carol Benke and Robert E. Newmeister, both of Maryland, and a sister Lena Mae Emil of Aurora.
Carl was predeceased by his parents, his wife Sybil Gieswein and his sister Vera Brosseau.
Services for Carl will take place at Arlington National Cemetery in early 2014.
