The occupants of a vehicle that crashed into the Molalla River early Sunday morning are still receiving medical care at OHSU.
Members of the Molalla Fire District and the Clackamas County Sheriff's Office were the first to arrive at the scene, about seven miles east of the intersection of Molalla Forest Road and Dickey Prairie Road, and found that three good samaritans had begun pulling the occupants of a 1996 Dodge Stratus from the wreckage. Douglas Parkins, 25; Michael Holliday, 31; and Ricky Hendrickson, 34; all helped pull the driver, Giovanni Demartino, 22, of Clackamas from the car. When emergency services personnel arrived, they found Demartino and the passenger, Danie Fournier, 23, on top of the vehicle. She had been able to swim to shore on the other side of the river where two passersby waded across the river to give her aid until emergency crews arrived.
With the assistance of the Clackamas County Water Rescue Consortium, crews used a rapid deployment raft to bring them to safety.
Demartino is in critical condition at OHSU, where Fournier is in stable condition.
Alcohol is believed to have been a factor in the accident, which is still under investigation. The case has been forwarded to the Clackamas County District Attorney's Office for charges of Driving Under the Influence of Intoxicants and Assault.
