Couzens to join Gladstone School Board

Following the resignation of Denise Browning, the Gladstone School Board had big shoes to fill.

by: SUBMITTED - CouzensIn unanimously voting for Nicole Couzens last month, they brought many new qualifications and values to the board. Couzens will be formally appointed Wednesday, July 9.

Couzens will help set district policy, provide input on educational programs and plan for administrative actions to manage the district’s budget and staff.

She has a master’s degree and a teacher’s license in early-childhood education and has worked in the district at the Gladstone Center for Children and Families since it opened in the Head Start location. She believes the School Board’s mission is to support every child in the district to become effective members of their community, and she has worked closely with the Gladstone School District, Oregon City School District, Childcare Resource and Referral, Clackamas Community College, Head Start and Northwest Families Services, among others on P3, a local social-services committee.

“One of my greatest pleasures has been serving... to help get children ready for modern day kindergarten starting at birth,” Couzens wrote to board members in her application. “The committee also works on bettering transitions for all children, (age) zero through third grade. Some other characteristics that I have that I feel will help support the board is I am a team player, punctual, reliable, competent and self-motivated.”
