A mother in a wheelchair and her adult son died after being hit by a MAX train in Gresham around 11:35 a.m. Saturday.
The victims are identified Bertha Nellie Kelly, 66, and John Paul Kelly, 48.
According to TriMet, initial reports suggest that the pair exited an eastbound MAX train at Gresham City Hall. They moved under the shelter at the station mid-platform. John Kelly reportedly sat in Bertha Kelly's lap and hit the toggle control of the device, propelling them both into the gap between the two coupled eastbound MAX vehicles just as the train was departing the station.
The operator reports that they did not see this happen and was not aware of what happen until a short time later, TriMet says.
Bertha Kelly died at the scene. Her son was transported to a local hospital, and later died.
Neighbors tell KOIN 6 News that John was developmentally disabled.
Gresham Police are leading in the investigation, and TriMet is providing any assistance necessary.
Blue Line traffic was disrupted for hours and shuttle buses were assigned to serve stations between the East 197th and Cleveland avenues. Serive was restored around 4:30 p.m.
