C. George Kimmell

He was born in Halsey Oregon in 1925 to descendants of the Applegate Trail. The Kimmell family moved from the mid-Willamette valley to La Grande during the great depression. The family moved back to the valley until, his Father’s accidental death in 1932. Then the family moved to Portland and settled in Sellwood.

George attended Washington High School. He was a member of the school track team and was All City. George joined the US Navy in October 1943. George was awarded the American Area Campaign Medal, Asiatic Pacific Area Campaign Medal, Philippine Liberation Medal and the World War II Victory Medal. George was discharged from the Navy in 1945. He attended Vanport College. He was accepted into the School of Pharmacy at Oregon State College and graduated in 1953. He opened High School pharmacy in 1962 in St. Helens, Oregon. He later opened another pharmacy in Scappoose. The stores were sold in 1972. George was involved in his local community. He served on the St. Helens School Board and became Chair in 1966. He was an icon in Columbia County as the home town pharmacist.

The family had their annual huckleberry picking expedition which included the family dog. His hobbies included fishing with his brother Bill (who preceded him in death), having a truck garden, and being a gourmet cook.

George is survived by his wife, 3 daughters, two sons, and 8 grandchildren.

A graveside service will be held Aug. 22, 2014 at 11:00 a.m. at Willamette National Cemetery.
