Beaverton couple will spend the night in Pearl District store window
A Beaverton couple has chosen an unusual way to spend Valentine's Day eve and part of the big day itself.
Their love will be there for all to see, within reason of course, when Johnny and Jennifer Johnson spend Saturday night and early Sunday camped out in the window of the Versailles Interiors furniture store, 221 N.W. 11th Ave., in the Pearl District.
Owner Gerard Philippon started the promotion last year as a publicity stunt, but now wants lovers spending the night in his window to be a tradition.
'We did it on a whim,' says Jennifer Johnson, 23. 'We were going to spend a boring Valentine's Day at home - and this certainly spices things up.'
The Johnsons have been married for 17 months. They attended Purdue University, and they leave Oregon shortly after Valentine's Day so Jennifer Johnson can pursue her graduate studies in New Zealand.
As part of the promotion, the Johnsons will get champagne, roses, chocolates and a Louis XIV bed valued at more than $10,000.
Philippon recently moved his business, which features French-made textiles, tapestries, furniture and furnishings, to the 11th Avenue location.
'We French love romance, and our showroom and selection is very romantic,' he says. 'I thought it would be amazing if someone could experience all of this - and, voila! - I thought, 'Why not put them in our window.' '
The couple will be served dinner in bed, courtesy of Fenouil Restaurant. The Johnsons will move into the window display at 5 p.m. Saturday and stay there until noon Sunday.
