Lori Daniels, Sarah Bergman will defend their 2009 crown
Portland is home to some of the best freestyle disc players in the world.
And, they'll be going for more titles Thursday through Sunday, Aug. 5 to 8, at Green Lake in Seattle in the World Freestyle Disc Championships. Finals are scheduled for noon Sunday, Aug. 8.
About 80 players from the United States, Europe, Puerto Rico and Israel and other places will be taking part, including Portland's Lori Daniels, Lisa Hunrichs and brothers Jake and Matthew Gauthier. Events are in pairs, mixed and three-way competitions, with tricks known as rolls, 'phlauds' and triple spinning 'gitis' catches.
Daniels won the 2009 women's pairs with partner Sarah Bergman of Seattle and they'll be back to defend their title. Hunrichs, featured last year in The Tribune, has won 13 world titles. Matthew Gauthier is a three-time world champ, Jake Gauthier a two-time champ.
Players play with various partners. For example, not only will she team with Bergman, but Daniels will combine with Jake Gauthier in mixed and Judith Hass (Karlsruhe, Germany) and Roland Karlsson (Sweden) in three-way.
Event proceeds will benefit YouthHaiti.org.
