Surfers wait for swells on coast

Nelscott Reef event will be part of Big Wave World Tour

The sixth annual Nelscott Reef Big Wave Classic at Lincoln City will likely take place in the next three months. It's just a matter of when the ocean allows it.

Organizers have to wait for ideal conditions to be forecasted. On the event website, www .nelscottreef.com, a red-amber-green light indicator updates the status; as of Tuesday, it's red.

Organizers will change to yellow status if/when they spot a forecast for favorable conditions. If/when the event is announced as on, the status will change to green and competitors will have 48 hours to make it to Lincoln City.

The Nelscott Reef surfing event will now be part of Gary Linden's Big Wave World Tour, which includes stops in Chile, Peru, Mexico and California.

The event added another feature this year. It'll be a paddle-in event, rather than a tow-in.

'The guys would rather paddle than tow, and they proved it can be done (last year),' said John Forse, event organizer.

Older surfers are giving up their spots for younger ones with the paddle-in rule, 'the ultimate show of sportsmanship in my opinion,' Forse adds.

The event is put on by Behemoth LLC of Lake Oswego.
