Terry Kay Hill

Sept. 4, 1950-March 18, 2011

Gresham resident Terry Kay Hill, 60, died Friday, March 18.

A viewing will be from noon to 8 p.m. Wednesday, March 23, at Gresham Memorial Chapel, 257 S.E. Roberts Ave. A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, March 24, at Gresham Memorial Chapel. Interment will be at Forest Lawn Cemetery.

Terry was born Sept. 4, 1950, in Portland to Robert and Emma (Coffey) Williams. Terry was raised in East County, attending Orient Grade School and graduating from Gresham High School in 1968.

Terry worked as a waitress at Dea's In and Out, where she met John Hill. They were married on Dec. 14, 1968, in Portland. Terry retired in 2009 after serving customers at Dea's for more than 40 years.

Terry loved spending time with her family, raising her three children and watching her grandkids play sports. She enjoyed camping, boating and traveling, and was always up for a good road trip.

Survivors include her husband; daughters, Kim Allen of Troutdale, Jenni Blevens of Gresham and Brandea Hill of Harbor City, Calif.; sister, Sharon Justice of Pe Ell, Wash.; brother, Carson Williams of Gresham; and four grandchildren.

Eugene E. Nellis

Sept. 20, 1928-March 18, 2011

Gresham resident Eugene E. Nellis, 82, died Friday, March 18.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, March 24, at Omega Funeral Home, 223 S.E. 122nd Ave., Portland.

Eugene was born Sept. 20, 1928, in Irondequoit, N.Y., to William and Pauline Nellis. Eugene was raised and educated in Rochester, N.Y. He enlisted in the Navy in 1945 and served in World War II, Korea and Vietnam. He was discharged in 1968.

On June 25, 1955, he married Joan McHale in Scranton, Pa.

Eugene was an auto mechanic. He resided in Portland for 21 years and in Gresham for 13 years.

Eugene was a member of St. Anne's Church, the 79ers Good Sam Club and the Fleet Retirement Association. His interests included motorcycles, traveling and computers.

He was preceded in death by his son, Patrick Nellis; sisters, Betty Wood, Mable Williams and Pauline Nellis; and brothers, William Nellis and Donald Nellis.

Survivors include his wife; sons, Michael Nellis of Georgetown, Texas, and Timothy Nellis of Portland; daughters, Kathleen Anderson of Portland and Kelly Hansen of Old Town, Fla.; six grandsons; and two great-grandchildren.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to the family or to a charity of choice.

Bruce Whitney Towsley

March 25, 1925-March 8, 2011

Troutdale resident Bruce Whitney Towsley died Tuesday, March 8, at Hopewell House Hospice. He was 85.

A funeral service was held Friday, March 11, at Cherry Park Presbyterian Church in Troutdale. A service and interment will be held at 1 p.m. Monday, March 21, at Willamette National Cemetery, 11800 S.E. Mount Scott Blvd., Portland.

Bruce was born March 25, 1925, in Gorman, Texas, to Phillip and Louise Towsley. Bruce was raised and educated in Desdemona, Texas, and in Vermont. He served in the Army Air Corps during World War II. He graduated from Whitman College and received his law degree from Northwestern School of Law of Lewis and Clark College.

Bruce moved to Portland in the 1950s. He resided in Corbett from 1970 to 1981 and in Troutdale since 1981.

In 1991, he married Helen Redden at Cherry Park Presbyterian Church.

Bruce was an attorney. He offered pro bono legal aid to seniors and was involved with the Oregon Lions Blindsight Foundation. He coached baseball and soccer.

Bruce attended Cherry Park Presbyterian Church, where he served as an elder. He also had previously sung in the church choir. In his honor, the choir sang at his March 11 service at Cherry Park.

'He was a benign subversive,' said Cherry Park Pastor Thomas Young. 'In any issue he always came down on the side of the least powerful.'

He was preceded in death by his wife in 2005; and by his brother, Phil Towsley Jr.

Survivors include his son, Doug Towsley of Estacada; daughter, Gail Towsley of Philadelphia; stepsons, Kevin Moore of Portland, Jim Redden of Corbett and Tom Redden of Lewiston, Idaho; stepdaughters, Susan Moore of Portland and Kristi Granberg of Corbett; and three grandchildren.

Daniel Richard Wykes

April 11, 1972-March 17, 2011

Gresham resident Daniel Richard Wykes died Thursday, March 17. He was 38.

A private family gathering will be held at a later date.

Dan was born April 11, 1972, in Bellevue, Wash., to Richard and Deborah (Becker) Wykes. He graduated from David Douglas High School in 1990 and went to work for the family business, Golden Hammer Auto Body, where his stepfather, Glen Whitney, taught him auto repair and painting. Dan later worked for Custom Touch Auto Body in Gresham.

Dan enjoyed the outdoors and loved fishing, hunting and scuba diving. He had a wonderful sense of humor and was very social.

Survivors include his mother of Troutdale; stepfather of Boring; brother, David of Gresham; stepsisters, Heather Horner of Nebraska and Kelly Hardy of Anchorage, Alaska; aunt, Roberta Witsoe of Seattle; and dog, Kirby.

Margaret Clara Gebhardt Pleyer Hoyt

Gresham resident Margaret Clara Gebhardt Player Hoyt died Friday, March 18. She was 95.

A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, March 24, at Redeemer Lutheran Church, 795 E. Powell Blvd. A graveside service will be held at 1 p.m. Friday, March 25, at Siskiyou Memorial Park in Medford.

Margaret was born July 19, 1915, in Forest Green, Mo., to Lewis and Sophia (Kottman) Gebhardt. She attended Salem Lutheran School in Forest Green.

On July 17, 1937, she married Homer J. Pleyer in Salisbury, Mo. Homer died in March 1967. On April 29, 1972, Margaret married Harold Hoyt in Medford. He died Jan. 21, 1974.

Margaret worked at the Salvation Army thrift store in Medford. In Gresham, she worked as a cook at Good Samaritan Fairlawn Village, at O'Hara Manor and at Gresham Manor.

She was preceded in death by her brothers, Frederick, Nicholas, Richard, Mortz, Awald and Orviel; and by her sisters, Alma, Lily and Louise.

Survivors include her daughter, Dorothy Wylie of Damascus; three grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

Michael Donald Cochran

Oct. 2, 1935-March 20, 2011

Former East County resident Michael Donald Cochran died Sunday, March 20, at Legacy Good Samaritan Medical Center in Portland. He was 75.

No service will be held.

Michael was born Oct. 2, 1935, in Gary, Ind., to Charles and Vera (Brewer) Cochran. Michael moved to Spokane, Wash., and then to Troutdale. He attended Gresham High School and was in the National Guard.

On Dec. 18, 1965, he married Shirley Nelson in Gresham.

Michael worked as a truck driver for L and E Trucking in Portland. He enjoyed hunting and spending his retirement traveling in his recreational vehicle and park hosting. He assisted his wife, who was a park ranger, at Goose Lake State Park near Lakeview.

Survivors include his wife; son, Charles Cochran of Sandy; daughters, Dixie Conley of Sandy, Nancy Peters of Anderson, Calif., and Cheryl Whelchel of Tangent; sister, Ruth Smith of Onalaska, Wash.; four grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Danny Lee Gaines

Oct. 22, 1946-March 12, 2011

Former Gresham resident Danny Lee Gaines, 64, died Saturday, March 12, at his home in Tempe, Ariz.

A memorial service has not been scheduled.

Danny was born Oct. 22, 1946, in Walla Walla, Wash., to Delbert and Dorothy Gaines. Danny attended Pilot Rock High School and Blue Mountain Community College in Pendleton. He served in the Army from 1966-68 and completed a tour in Vietnam.

On Jan. 25, 1969, he married Christine McCarty in Condon.

Danny worked as a truck driver. He enjoyed spending time with family, camping, woodworking and restoring cars.

Survivors include his wife; daughter, Tammy Gaines of Tempe, Ariz.; son, Grant Gaines of Gresham; sister, Nancy Schulz of Pendleton; brothers, Gene Gaines of Stanfield, Gerald Gaines of Richland, Wash., and Phillip Gaines of Pendleton; and 10 grandchildren.

John Ries

Dec. 8, 1934-March 16, 2011

Gresham resident John Ries, 76, died Wednesday, March 16.

A private graveside service will be held at Willamette National Cemetery in Portland.

John was born Dec. 8, 1934, in Burley, Idaho, to David and Elizabeth Ries. John graduated from Whittier High School in Whittier, Calif. He served in the Army from 1954-59. He attended Boise Junior College and received degrees from Idaho State College, Portland Community College and La Salle College in Portland, where he studied American law.

On July 11, 1954, he married Dora J. Pierce in Yuma, Ariz.

John was a contract specialist for the U.S. Forest Service. He retired in 1989. He resided in Gresham since 1971.

Survivors include his wife; sons, Robert Ries of Gresham and Steven Ries of Salem; daughters, Dorothy Dillon of Portland and Cheryl Ostrow of Portland; six grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
