Sandy police are seeking help from local residents to identify the person(s) involved in the theft of a purse and $100 jacket Feb. 25 from an unlocked vehicle.

In the typical 'smash, grab and run' scenario, the suspect(s) smashed the side window, grabbed a purse and jacket on the seat and ran away - apparently unseen.

The purse contained identity information and a credit card that was immediately used at a Sandy business to purchase items valued at nearly $200.

When the suspect tried to use the card again in a nearby community, the bank refused it.

A surveillance video was obtained from the store that accepted the card for the purchase.

If anyone is identified, according to the police report, the charges could be identity theft, fraudulent use of a credit card, criminal mischief, unlawful entry to a vehicle and theft.

Police are asking for help, and any information relayed may be kept confidential. The caller may remain anonymous.

Anyone with information that might assist police in this case should call Detective Jason Bickle at 503-668-5566.
