The Sandy Public Library will become more than a library during First Friday
A special event, which has been a regular feature of the monthly First Friday, will be found at the Sandy Public Library.
Between 7 and 9 p.m., the normally quiet reading room turns into a bustling coffee house, with live entertainers, café tables, tablecloths, flowers, coffee, tea and delectable pastries.
But the Library Coffee House will have to be put on hiatus while the library is being remodeled. That means the April 1 First Friday is likely the only coffee house the library will offer this year.
'The library will be moving to temporary quarters in mid-April while the current building is remodeled,' said program coordinator Katie Murphy. 'Because the temporary location will not be big enough to hold the coffee house event, this will be our last one for a while.'
All the more reason to put this event on your calendar.
The library offers the coffee house, with ambience and refreshments to help local residents relax after a couple of hours visiting local businesses.
Featured entertainment for First Friday's signature event is the Portland Guitar Duo. On April 1, the pair will perform classical and romantic music on original, authentic guitars from the 1800s that have been restored to playing condition, according to Murphy.
'Whether you're interested in guitars, classical music or just enjoy an evening out,' she said, 'please join us for this special show.'
Murphy describes the monthly event as a social hour (although it continues in the library for two hours).
She suggests local residents who visit the many businesses participating in April's First Friday can find a relaxing end to their evening at the library.
The library's part of the evening is to provide a place for people to relax and talk about what they saw and did during the previous two or three hours.
'The event is becoming a social hangout,' Murphy said, 'a place to meet people. And while you're enjoying the ambience, you are welcome to browse the books, flip through magazines or use the computers. All library services will be available for the extended hours.
'Come join us for this fun, free, family event on April 1, 7-9 p.m., at your local library.'
