Pat Devine brings a lifetime of experience to La Salle Prep
MILWAUKIE - Pat Devine is heading up La Salle Prep's track and field program this spring.
The father of La Salle cross country coach and vice principal Brian Devine, Pat Devine comes to La Salle Prep in Milwaukie after a long and successful teaching and coaching career at La Salle College High School of Wyndmoor, Penn.
Devine retired from La Salle College High School in May of 2010, after 39 years of teaching and coaching at the Pennsylvania school.
During his tenure, Devine's La Salle College High School teams won 15 Philadelphia Catholic League and eight Pennsylvania private school championships in either outdoor track and field, indoor track, or cross country.
In 2010, Devine guided the La Salle College High School Explorers to the Pennsylvania boys outdoor track and field title, the school's second in the sport while Devine was at the helm.
In addition to multiple team championships, Devine is a nine-time PCL Coach of the Year, as well as a Philadelphia Inquirer Track and Field Coach of the Year (1996), Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association Track Coach of the Year (1998), Penn Relays High School Coach of the Year (2001), and Philadelphia Inquirer Cross Country Coach of the Year (2003).
Devine's Explorers reached international prominence in 1996 at the Penn Relays. La Salle's 4x800 team took second place to St. Elizabeth Tech of Santa Cruz, Jamaica, making La Salle the top American 4x800 team at the Penn Relays. The Penn Relays are a three-day relay competition held at the University of Pennsylvania and feature some of the top high school, collegiate and international relay teams.
'I am very excited to have the opportunity to work with Pat Devine,' said La Salle athletic director Brian Crawford. 'His connection to a school with similar ideals and values made it easy to assume that he will immediately fit right in at La Salle Prep. Over the years that I have worked with Brian Devine, I have been very impressed with the way he inspires, leads, and communicates with students. In my conversations with Pat, it is apparent that they share many of the same attributes.'
Pat Devine inherits a La Salle Prep team that won the 2010 Capital Conference championship in boys' track and field. La Salle Prep was third in the state in boys cross country and 10th in girls cross country last fall.
