Tigers turn in strong marks in season opener

TIGARD - The Tigard High School track and field teams, after finishing 2010 on a high note, got their 2011 seasons off to promising starts.
The Tigers opened their season by turning in some impressive performances at the Jason Addy Classic, held March 16 at Tigard High School.
The Tigard boys, who won the Class 6A state team championship last year, had 11 first-place finishes at last week's season-opening meet.
Seniors Shane Fekete and Nick Roche and junior Sean McGetrick each had two individual first-place finishes.
Fekete ran to victory in the 400-meter dash in a time of 51.32 seconds and he had a winning throw of 169 feet, 3 inches in the javelin.
Roche picked up a win in the 800 in 2:04.48 and he had a winning time of 4:20.29 in the 1,500.
McGetrick won both hurdles races. He triumphed in the 110 high hurdles in 15.52 and he won the 300 intermediate hurdles in 43.28.
Also for the Tigard boys, senior Mark Medgin ran to victory in the 3,000 in 9:43.43 - edging Lake Oswego's Todd Macdonald by .01 seconds. Senior Robert Dusevoir cleared 5-6 to take first place in the high jump, Cody Cooper had a winning mark of 19-2½ in the long jump and senior Matthew Khoo won the triple jump with a mark of 41-0.
The Tigard 4 x 100 relay team of sophomore Brandon Wick and seniors Austin Sledz, Beau Hansen and Joseph Hart sprinted to victory in 44.06.
The Tigard girls also had their share of victories at the meet.
Senior Kelsi Schaer ran to a pair of individual first-place finishes and she also was part of a relay victory.
Schaer won the 1,500 in 5:13.72 and she triumphed in the 3,000 in 12:05.69. In the 4 x 400 Schaer teamed with freshman Katherine Soldwedel and seniors Katie Humphrey and Diana Merchant to pick up a victory in 4:20.94.
Humphrey won the 400 in 1:00.89 and Merchant had a winning mark of 50.44 in the 300 low hurdles.
