Local water polo stars honored
Three local water polo players were recently selected to attend the National Youth Training Camp, that following their success at the West Regional Olympic Development Program Championships March 19-20.
Blake Hokkanen and David Stiling were selected among ninth-grade boys from the regional in Corvallis, while April Snodgrass was selected from 11th-graders in the regional at Tempe, Ariz.
The training camp will be held May 27-31 in southern California, with 32 athletes to be selected as part of the National Youth Team.
Southridge taking applicants for its girls hoop coach job
Southridge High School is currently accepting applications for its head girls basketball coaching position.
Beaverton grad Velaski honored at Linfield
After leading No. 1 Linfield to seven victories over the past week, including three wins over nationally-ranked opponents, Beaverton High grad Claire Velaski was honored as the Northwest Conference Softball Pitcher Student-Athlete of the Week.
Velaski picked up four wins on the week, including back-to-back victories in a doubleheader against Pomona-Pitzer, and a complete-game win over Chapman. For the week, she struck out 26, walking nine, and held opposing batters to a .204 batting average.
The reigning NWC Pitcher of the Year is 8-1 so far this season, with four complete games and two shutouts. She has an ERA of 2.48 and holds opponents to a .207 batting average. Velaski is also tied for first in the conference in total strikeouts (55).
