PSU starts work on new residence hall
Texas company will build new 16-story building near SW Fifth Avenue
Portland State University scheduled a formal groundbreaking ceremony Wednesday on a new 16-story residence hall for 978 students at the corner of Southwest Fifth Avenue and College Street.
Known as College Station, the $66 million housing project will be owned and built by American Campus Communities, a Texas company. The facilities will include apartments, a fitness center, classrooms, lecture hall and retail space. Rooms will primary be for PSU sophomores and juniors.
The dorm is part of PSU's long-range plan to shed its commuter school image and, within five years, offer on-campus housing to 25 percent of its students. Currently there is only enough housing for 7.5 percent of PSU students.
PSU's plans will bring several thousand new residents to downtown Portland.
