On March 4, the Hayhurst Chess Club competed and brought home second place in the Chess for Success state team tournament.

All in all, 42 teams from around the state competed at the Oregon Convention Center in an exciting day of chess that began at 9 a.m. and ended close to 5 p.m.

Jake Winkler, Dezi Olivares, Mira Coles, Paul Simko and Koohun Manhowski were the top five kids who represented the Hayhurst Chess Club.

On March 5, Jake Winkler won second place in the individual Chess for Success state tournament as well. Winkler has been competing in tournaments around the state for the past three years and will be competing in the Oregon Scholastic Chess Federation state tournament in Seaside, Ore., on April 1 and 2.

The Hayhurst Chess Club meets during the year twice a week during lunch and recess. It is an opportunity for the kids to have fun playing chess against each other and learn more about the game. Thank you to Coach Rier for all of his time, support and encouragement.
