Forest Grove farmers market opens May 11

Poster contest leads to 2011 opener May 11

Get ready, market-goers - the 2011 Forest Grove Farmers Market will launch at 4 p.m. Wednesday, May 11.

More than 25,000 shoppers attended the market last year in downtown every Wednesday night from mid-May to mid-October. The Forest Grove market is managed by local nonprofit Adelante Mujeres, an organization dedicated to giving low-income Latinos the tools to achieve self determination in the areas of education, empowerment and enterprise.

The market reflects the demography of the community with approximately 20 percent Latino vendors, many of whom attend sustainable agriculture classes offered by Adelante Mujeres. The goal is to offer local farmers and artisans an opportunity to sell select handmade crafts and locally produced fruits and vegetables. 'The event brings the whole community together in a healthy and relaxed way,' said Gina Bell, market manager.

Adelante Mujeres is currently accepting submissions for the official design of the 2011 Forest Grove Farmers Market poster. The top three winning designs receive cash prizes of $100, $50 and $25. For details about the contest or vendor regulations, visit www.adelantemujeres/fgfm.
