No. 3 Sun Devils foil Oregon's softball upset bid

EUGENE - Third-ranked Arizona State broke a 0-0 tie with a two-run homer in the top of the seventh inning Friday to win the series opener over No. 15 Oregon at Howe Field.

Katelyn Boyd's team-high 12th HR of the season came after Christina Zambrana was hit by a pitch.

UO fell to 29-7 overall, 1-3 in the Pac-10.

The Sun Devils, who were averaging 8.76 runs per game, are 36-3, 3-1.

Oregon sophomore Jessica Moore (14-4) held ASU to two hits over the first six innings before giving up the long ball. She had five strikeouts and four walks.

The Ducks managed just one hit against ASU freshman Dallas Escobedo (18-2). Oregon freshman Courtney Ceo singled to shortstop with two out in the sixth.

Game 2 of the series is 3 p.m. Saturday.

Game 3 will be at 11 a.m. Sunday.
