PSU softball stumbles out of conference gate

Portland State suffered two blows in its Pacific Coast Softball Conference openers Saturday.

The Vikings lost 5-4 and 4-1 to Utah Valley at Erv Lind Stadium.

PSU (12-14 overall) has dropped six straight games overall, while Utah Valley snapped a four-game losing streak and improved to 9-18.

The teams have another doubleheader scheduled for 11 a.m. Sunday at Erv Lind.

Portland State went 12-0 in conference games at Erv Lind last season, and they led 3-0 in the second inning of Sunday's opener, after Karmen Holladay drove in two runs with a double and Brandi Campos scored another run with a single.

In Pac-10 softball:

Oregon State lost at home to No. 5 Arizona 4-1, 6-3, after beating the Wildcats on Friday. OSU is 1-5 in the Pac-10 and 17-13 overall. The Wildcats climbed to 5-1, 34-7.

Oregon, ranked 15th, fell at home to No. 3 Arizona State 10-5. It was the most runs allowed this season by ASU (37-3, 4-1). Oregon is 29-8, 1-4. Their three-game series concludes at 11 a.m. Sunday at Howe Field.
