Expansion of Bottle Bill passes key hurdle
Bill would require deposits on more types of containers
An expansion of Oregon's iconic Bottle Bill passed its first legislative hurdle Thursday, moving out of a House committee by a 7 to 1 vote. House Bill 3145 adds nickle deposits to most juice, tea and sports/energy drinks. The bill also encourages the development of bottle redemption centers across the state. The deposit would go up to a dime in 2016 if the recycling rate for covered bottles drops below 80 percent.
The bill, coming on the 40th anniversary of passage of the original bill, now goes to the full House floor.
