Harold Schnitzer honored for community spirit
Praise is pouring in for Harold Schnitzer, the Portland real estate developer and philanthropist whose giving helped shape the character and culture of the city for decades.
Schnitzer died early Wednesday morning from complications related to cancer and diabetes. He was 87.
Schnitzer and his wife, Arlene, have donated more than $80 million to institutions including the Portland Art Museum, the Oregon Health and Science University and Judaic Studies programs at the University of Oregon and Portland State University.
Gov. John Kitzhaber praised Schnitzer, saying he has enriched the lives of countless Oregonians. Mayor Sam Adams said Schnitzer had set a high bar for other philanthropists to follow.
Praise also came from officials at OHSU and other institutions Schnitzer had supported. He is survived by his wife and son, Jordan.
