My New Year wish for you is good health and then happiness. The following drink recipes are adapted from 'Sheila Lukins All Around the World Cookbook' by Sheila Lukins. 2008 is a good time to try out some new cocktails on your friends and family.
Simple Sugar Syrup
1 cup granulated sugar
2 cups water
Combine the ingredients in a saucepan and simmer until the sugar is dissolved, stirring occasionally.
Cool to room temperature; pour into a glass jar. Cover and store in the refrigerator until ready for use. Watch for mold inside the jar.
2 ounces simple sugar syrup
6 ounces white rum
Juice of 2 limes
2 thin strips of lime zest, for garnish
Combine syrup, rum and lime juice in a shaker or small pitcher, stirring well, and pour over ice cubes in 2 tall glasses. The only rule is to pour the sugar syrup into the glass first, followed by the rum and lime juice. Stir the syrup before adding or it will get too thick to mix well.
Joyce's Pretty Party Punch
1 quart sparkling water/juice or champagne
Juice from jar of maraschino cherries
1 egg white, beaten stiff
In a punch bowl, mix sparkling juice and cherry juice. At serving time, fold in beaten egg white and ladle into punch cups immediately.
