Tigard girls earn third place at San Diego tournament


SAN DIEGO - The Tigard High School girls basketball team battled its way to third place in the Surf Division at the Surf 'N Slam Tournament held last Thursday through Saturday at University City High School in San Diego.

The Tigers opened the tournament last Thursday by scoring a 55-47 win over Thomas Jefferson, NY. Sophomore Chelsea Biglow led a balanced Tiger scoring attack in the win with 11 points. Senior Brittany Duty scored 10 points, senior Heidi Pizer added nine and junior Corinn Waltrip scored eight.

On Friday, Tigard was edged 46-42 by St. Mary's, Calif., in a tourney semifinal game. Waltrip paced the Tigers with 17 points and Duty added 11.

Tigard bounced back to post a 68-66 win over Eastlake, Calif., in Saturday's tourney third-place contest. Duty and Waltrip each poured in 21 points in that game and junior guard Melissa Woolard added 11 points.

Tigard, with its two wins in three tourney games, upped its season record to 7-2.

The Tigers will next be in action Friday when they host rival Tualatin in a Pacific Conference opener starting at 7:15 p.m.
