Tigers, Wolves wrestle well at tourneys
The Tigard and Tualatin high school wrestling teams tuned up for their Pacific Conference opening matches by turning in strong performances at tournaments held over the holiday break.
The Tigers finished sixth in the team standings at the Pendleton Tournament, held Friday and Saturday. Tigard scored 157.5 team points at the tourney to take sixth. Pendleton won the tourney title with a score of 258 points.
Senior Andrew Cox had the top individual placing for the Tigers as he claimed second place in the 285-pound weight class.
Also for Tigard, Ty Mangum placed third at 112 pounds, Mike Homma was third at 125, Will McLellarn was third at 130 and Toby Yi was third at 160.
The Tualatin wrestling team placed sixth at the NW Duals, a 40-team dual meet tournament held Friday and Saturday at Westview High School and the Tualatin Hills Park and Recreation District Complex in Beaverton.
The Wolves, after earning a spot in Saturday's 16-team championship bracket, earned a spot in the fifth-place match, where they were edged 36-24 by Crook County.
Tigard and Tualatin are both scheduled to open their Pacific Conference dual match schedules today (Thursday). Tigard will be home to face McMinnville and Tualatin will host Forest Grove in matches scheduled to start at 7 p.m.
