Does Oregon State's Yvenson Bernard expect to be drafted?
'I don't know. You tell me,' says Bernard, the Boca Raton, Fla., native who ranks with Ken Simonton and Steven Jackson as the greatest tailbacks in school history. 'I don't know about the NFL. I mean, (former OSU standout) Bill Swancutt is one of the best D-linemen I've ever seen, and he's not playing? It's crazy. It seems like you have to have the right people with the right team like you and want you.'
Bernard, set for duty in Saturday's Hula Bowl, says his best 40-yard clocking is 4.56 seconds, 'and I know I have to improve that,' he says. 'It seems like the 40 time is all they care about now.'
Mike Riley, who served as head coach of the San Diego Chargers from 1999-2001, is not sure if Bernard will get drafted.
'I can't imagine if Ev is still there in the late rounds, somebody wouldn't take the guy,' the OSU coach says. 'He should get drafted, and he can definitely make it. He'll do so many good things in training camp, people will like him a lot. He might run pretty darn well in a 40. And a guy that productive, with that many positive character attributes, almost has to make it.'
Bernard says he'll take nothing for granted.
'I don't expect anything,' he says. 'I'll take a chance anywhere I can get it. That's all I'm asking for.'
