BASKETBALL - Portland Lutheran starts the game on a 13-0 run
The Portland Lutheran boys basketball team put Corbett away in less time than it takes most people to walk outside and check their mail, dispatching the Cardinals 61-45 on Tuesday, Jan. 9.
The Blue Jays raced to a 13-0 lead less than four minutes into the game when Abel Araya drilled a 3-pointer from the left side, then turned another steal into two more points.
Corbett would never get within double-digits again.
'We wanted to come out quick and get some easy baskets,' Lutheran coach Chad Rush said. 'We came out with some pressure on defense that caused some turnovers and really got us going.'
The Blue Jays extended to their largest margin of 22 points in the second half. Araya led all players with 19 points, while Drew Young came off the bench to pace Corbett with 14.
• In Class 6A action, Gresham raced to a 20-4 lead and held off a late Sandy surge to earn a 60-52 win. Gresham hit 10 straight free throws down the stretch to seal the victory.
Mat Delaunay piled up 25 points to lift Barlow to a 68-53 road win against David Douglas.
