BASKETBALL: Forest Grove gets off to an inauspicious debut in Pacific Conference play

Prior to the season, Forest Grove girls basketball coach Po Waiwaiole would not have predicted that his team would lose its first three Pacific Conference games by a combined 67 points.

But three games in - with losses to Newberg, Canby and Tigard - that's exactly where the Lady Vikings sit.

Forest Grove's early-season struggles continued last week with a 66-40 loss to Canby on Thursday and a 69-41 setback against Tigard on Friday. The Lady Vikings (4-9, 0-3) will have to rally quickly or risk falling off the pace set by Tigard, Canby, Tualatin and McMinnville, which sit in a four-way tie for first place.

Forest Grove dug itself an early hole last Thursday against Canby, as the Cougars' full-court pressure led to a flurry of turnovers and a 25-13 halftime deficit from which the Lady Viks never recovered.

The story was the same the next night against Tigard, with the Tigers pulling ahead 22-9 by the end of the first quarter and 54-26 after three periods.

Kendra Berning was Forest Grove's leading scorer in both games, with 12 points against Tigard and nine against Canby. Taylor Janac added a combined 17 points in the two games.
