Tillamook beats Illionois Valley in dual meet championships

After three straight Oregon Wrestling Classic championships, Illinois Valley dethroned the Rangers last year in the semifinals.

This year, Estacada's wrestlers didn't even qualify for the semis, and Tillamook claimed the top prize over Illinois Valley.

The Rangers defeated Ontario 53-28 and Molalla 45-30, but lost to Sweet Home, 56-21, in the first several rounds of competition at the unofficial dual meet championships in Redmond last weekend.

Phoenix dealt the Rangers a blow in the quarterfinals, beating the one-time-powerhouse 50-30.

Illinois Valley beat Phoenix 40-24 in the semifinals to advance to wrestle Tillamook, whom beat Sweet Home 41-26, in the finals. The Cheesemakers won four matches by fall in the finals to claim victory 42-25.

The Rangers, currently ranked 17th in the state as a team, have 12th-ranked wrestlers at four light-weight classes. Micheal Strickland, a senior three-time state participant who finished fifth last year, is ranked second and Estacada's highest ranked athlete.

Heavyweight Kyle Allen, a junior, is ranked eighth. Cody Anders, also a junior, is ranked 11th in the 135-pound class.

Freshman Garret Heinetz (103), junior Sam Stafford (112), junior Craig Morgan (119), and sophomore Andrew Worthington (130) are all ranked 12th in their weight classes.

The Rangers are scheduled to wrestle at Stayton at 7 p.m. on Thursday.
