On the afternoon of Jan. 2, a man walked up to Lake Oswego Fire Department's Station 211 on Jean Road with what he thought was a M80 - a homemade bomb. The man said he had found the object.
'It looked like a large firecracker,' said Lake Oswego Police Department Sgt. Jerry Douglas. Fire officials 'told him to put it right where he was standing,' Douglas said.
Local police called the bomb squad from the Portland Police Department. The bomb squad hauled it off and blew it up, Douglas said.
He said it turned out not to be a bomb, but it looked suspicious.
Such events are not uncommon. Douglas said several years ago, an elderly woman brought in a missile to the downtown Lake Oswego fire station and laid it on the front desk.
'She said she had found it in her garage,' he said. 'We called the bomb squad.'
