Tigers grapple to win in bout at Forest Grove

TIGARD - The Tigard High School wrestling team picked up its first Pacific Conference dual match win of the season last Thursday.

And the Tigers got that victory in domination fashion.

Tigard, getting wins on the mat as well as taking advantage of six forfeit victories, rolled to a 60-15 win over Forest Grove in a league match held at Forest Grove High School.

With the win, Tigard evened its league mark at 1-1 while the Vikings fell to 0-2 in league matches.

Tigard junior Mitch Thornburg had the quickest win of the night as he pinned Forest Grove's Sheyne Higginbotham in a time of 39 seconds in the 152-pound match.

Tigard's Mike Homma pinned Brice Turnhill in 2:23 in the 125-pound match. Tigard senior Ty Mangum, at 112 pounds, scored a 17-5 major decision win over Forest Grove's Pato Rellergert.

Tiger junior Steven Kim notched a 7-0 decision win over Justin Seitz at 119. Tigard junior Garrett Johnson bested Neil Wilson 10-3 at 125 and senior Jake Harbolt scored a 9-4 decision win over Forest Grove's Orion Collins at 145.

Also for Tigard, Will McLellarn (130 pounds), Jacob Engle (160), Tobby Yi (171), Jake Moriniti (189), Nick Moore (215) and Andrew Cox (285) all won by forfeit.

On Saturday, the Tigers finished in third place, out of five teams, at the Woodburn Tournament. Mangum (112), Harbolt (145) and Yi (160) all won individual tourney titles.

The Tigers were scheduled to face Tualatin in a league dual match on Wednesday. Results of that match weren't available when the Times went to press.

Tonight (Thursday), Tigard hosts Canby in a 7 p.m. match.

On Saturday, the Tigers will be hosting a four-team, dual match tournament starting at 9:30 a.m. at Tigard High.
