Jan. 23 meeting to address 223rd Avenue projects

A public meeting to discuss transportation improvement projects around the 223rd Avenue underpass in Fairview will be held 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 23, at Fairview Community Center, 300 Harrison St.

The first proposed project involves replacing a railroad bridge that runs above 223rd near Interstate 84, which will allow 223rd to be widened between Northeast Bridge Street and Sandy Boulevard. The second project will improve the nearby intersection of 223rd and Sandy.

The plan calls for replacing the bridge with a longer structure to allow the road, which narrows to 20 feet under the short Union Pacific railroad bridge, to be widened to improve safety for all modes of traffic. The intersection project at Sandy Boulevard will include installation of new traffic signals, wider approaches and turn lanes, and new curbs, sidewalks and drainage.

The bridge replacement will require an extended closure of 223rd Avenue during construction, which has yet to be scheduled. Multnomah County staff will present information about the projects at the meeting, including details about the traffic plan, and address questions and concerns.

For more information, call the Multnomah County Transportation Department at 503-988-5050, ext. 29620.
