The Portland Timbers have 14 players under contract for next season. The list includes no goalkeepers and only three forwards and three defenders. The latest signee, forward Chris Brown, was waived recently by Real Salt Lake of Major League Soccer. The 5-8, 177-pound Brown, 30, had five goals in 22 games last season for RSL, which went 6-15-9, the second-worst record in the league. Brown is a Jesuit High grad who played with Timber standout Andrew Gregor at the University of Portland.
• The Timbers targeted signing one or more players from the Seattle Sounders' 2007 United Soccer Leagues First Division championship squad, but Portland coach Gavin Wilkinson says that might not be likely to happen. 'I was hoping to pick up one or two Seattle players,' he says, 'but with them going to MLS, I'm sure those players are going to want to stay up there.'
