Early lead vanishes for Sandy wrestlers

WRESTLING -- Pioneers drop three nailbiters in 47-21 loss to Barlow
by: Darrell Jackson, Sandy's Matt Rees works for a fall during his win at 152 pounds against Barlow on Thursday.

Once again, Sandy's wrestling team saw its quick start disappear during a 47-21 loss to Barlow on Thursday, Jan. 17.

Sandy jumped out to an early 12-0 lead when Aaron Paul (103 pounds) and Trent Rutledge (112) each scored pins in the lightweights.

The team tally could have been much closer, but Barlow won three bouts by two points or fewer. That caused an 18-point swing in the team score.

In the most entertaining match of the night, Sandy's Will Jeschke battled back and forth, but fell to Barlow's Josh Kalmbach 12-11.

Kalmbach jumped out to a quick 4-0 lead with an early takedown and near-fall. Jeschke battled back with a two-point reversal and later scored his own near fall, before the first period ended at 9-8 Kalmbach.

The action slowed down in the second period as Kalmbach outscored Jeschke 4-2 to lead 12-11 heading into the final period. Jeschke started in the down position, but couldn't get a one-point escape to tie the game and Kalmbach held on for the win.
