Has city considered combining police, fire posts?
Since both the Forest Grove police and fire chiefs are about to retire, now would be an opportune time to combine the departments into a single public safety office without the emotions of displacing the top management. I assume that we would achieve efficiencies by combining the administrative functions of two departments into one - can anyone confirm or refute this? It would certainly help the city's credibility with the voters if they were to at least seriously explore cost efficiencies in the two largest operations in our budget at this point.
I have lived in areas of the country that have combined public safety departments and they worked quite well. Does our city charter permit such a change? Can we even look into the possibility? Would the citizens support such a change?
I would hate to see this opportunity pass without consideration. It would be too late once we get new chiefs hired and in place.
And speaking of efficiencies, how are the talks going with Cornelius about combining one or both public safety operations with our departments?
Can't hurt to ask, right?
