Event - Fund-raiser helps fill the gap between needs of the program and what the district can provide
Music lovers of all stripes will be welcomed at the 10th annual Forest Grove School District Strings Auction which begins at 6 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 9.
The event, which will include oral and silent auctions, will be held in Fern Hill Elementary School, 4445 Heather St. in Forest Grove.
The evening will feature performances by some of the district's strings students, including musicians from all grade levels. The Muddy Bottom Boys, a bluegrass band, will also perform.
Markus and Markus of Banks will be auctioneer for the event.
Auction item donations - services, event passes, theme baskets and more - are now being procured, said auction chairwoman Elena Parker. They can be brought to the Forest Grove School District office, 1728 Main St. Or, donors can call 503-357-9121 or 503-357-6960 to have the items picked up. Donations are tax-deductible and donors will be recognized at the auction.
Last year's auction raised $6,500 for instrument repairs, replacement strings, music, accompanists, competition entry fees and scholarships, Parker said.
This year, the program includes 325 students in grades 3-12 and six orchestras. Two instructors, Jonathan Cohen and Ann Cullen, serve 10 schools.
Last year, strings students performed more than 30 concerts in the Forest Grove community.
